Peer and his mother , and Peer runs off to a local wedding. There he gets involved in a fight and off the bride, Ingrid. Peer has to flee, and during his flight he meets the daughter of the Mountain king, whom he wants to marry.
The Mountain king describes what Peer has to do to marry his daughter. He to grow a tale, can’t see the light of day for the rest of his life, and he has to make a cut in his eyes to see the world as all trolls do. Peer not want become a troll.
Solveig, whom Peer met at the wedding and fell in love with, comes. Peer and Solveig together in the cabin in the forest, but he her and goes on his travels. He away for many years.
Peer to Africa, first to Morocco where he finds a white horse and a beautiful red coat. He puts on the coat and rides into the nearest village. There, he is invited to a village supper in his honour. There is one dancer that Peer very closely, the chief's daughter, Anitra. Peer her so much, more than anyone ever.
He off again, to Egypt where he ends up as a guest in the madhouse in Cairo. At last on his way home as an old man, he is shipwrecked.
By the end Peer struggles for his soul and his own self-knowledge. At last Peer finds Solveig, who been waiting for him in the cabin ever since he left. She him that he has always been himself in her belief, hope and love.
