Born Free
I teach many refugee students and all of them say they love Australia because they feel at peace and feel they have freedom.
I tell tehm the story of Els a in born free (children and adults love the song and the film. I tell students that a very basic human right is to not live in fear and be able to follow your heart. This song is then used for students to make up their own story to tell the class about what being free means to them. The song is also useful to have students listen to with their eyes closed. On opening their eyes and without speaking to anyone they draw a picture representing freedom to them. each student is then asked to talk their own picture. This often shows just how different visual interpretations are.
The cloze activity is just another short exercise and then discuss some of the words from the song and their meanings. A short story of born free is on Wikopedia.
