Confusion with verbs

The instructions were to put the correct verb in the blank area. So since a verb expresses action the common approach that was used is to add ing with the word. The images clearly showed that the verb was in progress. For instance the last image showed some one "playing football" which is correct! However the manner in which the other "verbs" were written was a somewhat misleading.
