Present Perfect vs Present Simple
In Spanish, the Present Simple is always used when we speak about habitual present actions, regardless of whether we mention the duration or not. However, in English, if we mention the duration of a present action, the Present Perfect is always used:
Yo vivo en Madrid --> I live in Madrid
Yo vivo en Madrid desde 2015 --> I have lived in Madrid since 2015
Complete these sentences with the correct tense, present simple or perfect, of the verbs in brackets. Do NOT use contractions, and be careful with capital letters:
1. I (live) in London. I (work) for a big lawyer company. I (work) in this office for 10 years.
2. How long (Peter, have) this car? I (have) the same model!
3. (your wife, belong) to a political party? - Yes; she (participate) actively in politics since she was 20.
4. I (know) my best friend for ten years, since we started high school.
5. Mary (want) to travel to the USA. She (always, want) to see New York.
6. I (not, hear) of Peter for two weeks. I (not, know) where he may be.
7. Please tell James to speak up. We (not hear) him.
8. The school (be) open since 1992. It (open) at 8:30 and (close) at 17:00.
9. I (be) a doctor. I (be) a doctor for 10 years.
10. The child (need) to take this medicine every day. He (take) it for two weeks already.
