‘Can we sleep outside tonight?’ Alex and Sally asked their mother one evening when it was very hot. She said ‘Yes’. The girls put blankets on the grass, then got two glasses of water in the kitchen. They looked at the stars, then went to sleep. But the night got colder and Alex woke up. A cat jumped off the garden wall.
‘What’s that?’ asked Alex. ‘Are you awake, Sally?’
Then a big, black bat flew out from one of the trees.
‘I am awake,’ answered Sally. ‘What was that?’
The girls sat up. ‘I don’t like being outside at night. I’m afraid,’ Sally said.
‘Me too!’ said Alex. ‘Let’s go inside.’ The girls picked up their blankets and ran to the house. In the morning, their mother found them, not outside, but in their beds in their bedroom!

My brother, Nick, has a small green frog. He’s called Kim. Kim goes to school every day with Nick, and all the children in Nick’s classroom know him. Nick carries him there carefully in his bag with his books and his ticket for the bus. Kim sits on Nick’s desk. Sometimes he’s naughty! Yesterday, he tried to eat Nick’s rubber and pencils. The frog enjoys all the lessons, but when the children do painting he likes that best.
Yesterday, Kim looked at Nick’s painting. He wanted to paint too! He put his two feet in the red paint and then jumped on Nick’s picture. The teacher saw this and laughed.
‘Nick and Kim, your painting is great!’ she said. Nick was very happy.
‘Who’s the best frog in the world?’ he asked loudly.
‘Kim!’ all his friends said.

On Saturday morning, it was very sunny. ‘Mum, can I play football in the park with my friends today?’ Sally asked. ‘Not today, Sally,’ said her mother. Sally started to cry. ‘Don’t be sad, Sally. I want to go and see Grandma and Grandpa today. Go and put on your jacket.’ At her grandparents’ house, Sally found her grandfather in the garden. He had a big bag with something round inside it. ‘Come with me, Sally,’ he said. They walked down the road to a field. When they got there, Sally’s grandfather opened the bag. Inside there was a ball and a picnic of sandwiches. lemon cake and a bottle of orange juice. They played football and then sat on the grass and ate their picnic. ‘Grandpa,’ Sally said, ‘you’re better at football than my friends!’ Grandpa laughed and said, ‘Thank you, Sally!’
