INTERROGATIVE RESPONSES
The automatic question responses to statements fall into two main groups. Let's study the first one. The agent or prepositional part of the command is missing, and the response asks for further clarification.
Example: Go quickly - Where to? ; Open it - What with?
These are normally spoken with a falling intonation. The preposition is always at the end in this pattern; Whom is never heard.
