A KNIGHT'S LIFE

The first thing to remember about knights is that they were warriors. They fought for their king or lord.
Sometimes they lived in the castle of the king or lord. They would defend him in a fight or war. Other times the knight might live in his own castle.
If the king or lord needed help and called him, it was the knight's duty to go help.

Only men could be knights, because only men were allowed to fight in war. It was very expensive to be a knight.
Fighting in battle is very dangerous so the knight would wear lots of protection called armor.
Armor was very expensive because it was made out of heavy metals. Each knight had unique armor.
The knight could not put on his armor by himself.

A knight also had to be an excellant rider. His horse was very, very  important to him. He had to look very hard to find the right horses
and then he had to take good care of them. The most important things for a knight were his sword and shield.

Except, a  knight did not work. His work was to practice for war, we call this training. This was also very expensive.
Sometimes there would be friendly competitions between the knights. The winner of the competition could win lots of money
or a chance to marry a princess. Knights would come from faraway lands to partipate and try to be the champion of the tournament.
These tournaments were very dangerous. One of the most popular events at the tournament was the joust.

A knight was suppose to be a good person who protected the weak, especially women and children.
He was not suppose to lie or cheat. He was suppose to be charitable. He was suppose to be loyal to his lord or king.
We call this the code of chivalry. Unfortunately, not all knights were good knights.
