Fort Vellore was under the �then of a British Commander in chief of Madras . The officer there ordered that Indian soldiers stationed at the Fort should wear a new round of hat like the British did replacing their turbans and jewellery.�Offended Indian soldiers instead of wearing the hats decided to bring down the hats of the British officers. On the 10th of July, before sunrise Indian soldiers attacked the European barracks. The battle went on for hours but by then the British had called in a army. The Indians were defeated. But the was sent out strong and clear that India was ready to fight back. Since then, there has been no looking back. The Revolt, and then the Quit India Movement until, we, Indians became free.�During the time of the , the Fort witnessed the tragic of the Vijayanagara Royal Family.

Fort Vellore had the of being one of the most impregnable Forts of its time. It passed hands from the Nayakas to the Bijapur Sultans to the Marthas, Carnatic Nawabs and finally to the British.

This �filled with water till today of being the widest and the deepest around any fort in India. The circumference of the moat, about 8000 feet and in its it was nearly 200 feet deep.� says there were some 10,000 crocodiles in the moat for the external line of defence. Now, the waters are shallow and clean, just right for tourists to take a boat ride around the fort.
