            THE GREAT KAPOK TREE

  1. This book contains several words that may be unfamiliar. Before listenning to the story read the definitions and match them to the words by writing the correct number.                                                     

1. Amazon  One family after another; a measure of time 
2. Ancestors  Tool used to shape, split and cut wood
3. Ax   The gas we breathe to stay alive
4. Canopy   A  kind of roof formed by treetops
5. Generations   The largest river in the world
6. Howling   Families that came before us
7. Oxygen  On fire, ablaze, fiery
8. Pollination  The plants growing on the ground, under the canopy
9. Smouldering   How plants reproduce
10. Understory   A long, loud and emotional sound

3. Write the name of each animal.                                                                               
 
 

 

 
 
4. As the man sleeps, the animals plead with him not to chop down the tree. Write the correct letter under the picture of the animal that gave the following reasons. (Notice that two birds say the same sentence)
 
     A. A ruined rainforest means many ruined lives.
     B. How much is beauty worth?  Can you live without it?
     C. He and generations of his ancestors had lived on that tree, a tree of miracles.
     D. We have seen what happens once you begin to chop down the tree.  Many people set along this land and soon the forest will   disappear.  Where once there was life and beauty only black and smouldering ruins remain.
     E. All living things depend on one another.
     F. The Kapok tree is home to many birds and animals.  If you cut it down where will I find my dinner?
     G. What happens tomorrow depends upon what you do today. 
     H. After you chop this one down, you will come back for another and another.  The roots of this tree will wither and die and     there will be nothing left to hold the earth in place and the forest will become a desert.
     I. Animals and people need oxygen in order to live and trees produce oxygen.
