State and Activity Verbs:

State verbs describe states (situations):
  • be: I am hungry.
  • have: I have a son.
  • need: I need to sleep.
  • like/feel: I want/I love/I hate/I prefer...
  • thought/opinion: I think/I know/I believe/I agree...
  • The senses: It looks/It tastes/It looks/It feels/It seems...

Activity Verbs describe activities:

  • He usually reads books.
  • Today he is reading a magazine.

We usually use present simple or present continuous for activity verbs.

We usually use present simple for state verbs, but be careful because sometimes they can be used with an active meaning (e.g. He is looking for his book.).
